Penguin Case Study

Penguin Spinebreakers case study

What was the challenge?

Penguin is one of the world’s leading publishers. They are home to innumerable award-winning authors including Zadie Smith, Nick Hornby and Marian Keyes.

Penguin wanted to create an online book community. The purpose of the community was to encourage teenagers to get more involved in reading and writing and interact with other young people who share their passions.

What was our solution?

We created a new website for Penguin, Spinebreakers.co.uk, on a Microsoft SharePoint platform.

Penguin took the radical decision to leave the site’s editorial control to those who best knew the target audience – a team of nine young people aged 13 to 18. It was very important therefore that the content management system was easy to use and highly flexible.

The final website facilitated:

  • Regular blogs from the editorial team
  • Audio and video reviews and blogs
  • Reader polls and book-rating functionality
  • Automatic conversion of video file formats to Flash

Visit the Spinebreakers website.

What did Penguin have to say?

“Spinebreakers.co.uk allows Penguin to take the lead, making books a far more attractive proposition in a crowded teen market place.

“Thanks to Content and Code for their professionalism and great work. We look forward to continuing this relationship.”
Anna Rafferty, Online Marketing Director, Penguin Group
